Coping with Bereavement: Support for Loss and Healing

The loss of a loved one can significantly alter your life, impacting your beliefs, personality, and perspective on life. Grief is a deeply personal experience, and there is no set timeline for healing. Everyone processes loss differently, and there is no right or wrong way to grieve.

One of the most helpful steps in coping with bereavement is talking to others who understand. Our Everlasting Memories: Grief and Loss support Group at Sunderland Mind provides a safe, welcoming space where you can share your feelings and experiences. In our group, we focus on compassion, trust, and confidentiality, ensuring that you receive the support you need during this challenging time.

Take the first step towards healing. Join us at Sunderland Mind for a supportive community where you can navigate your grief at your own pace.

My husband J passed away in April 2023, after losing his battle with Leukemia. Understandably I was devastated. My Family and friends were amazing, extremely supportive. After a few weeks, i felt i needed something more – some outside help from People who weren’t necessarily close to me. I joined Mind’s Grief group, ten weeks after my husband had passed . A beautiful lady called Maxine facilitates the group. From day one, I thought yes! I feel comfortable here. No longer did I feel so alone and lost. There were people who (at different stages of grief) understood what I was going through. What happened next was a major part in my recovery. I was asked if I would like to become a volunteer. I jumped at the chance. I felt I could give back to Sunderland Mind and those who were struggling, the incredible support they had given me. Two years on I am in a very happy place, after bumping into my childhood sweetheart. We are inseparable and although i will always love J, I have met an amazing man who I want to spend the rest of my life with. I honestly feel I would not be where I am today without the incredible support from Sunderland Mind and the special people I am fortunate to have met – Donna

The Everlasting Memories group has been a massive help and support for me. Apart from the group sessions, I have had 2 separate one on one bereavement counselling sessions, all have benefited me greatly. The group is a huge help to me, we laugh, cry and support each other. I have made new friends for life who understand each other and what we are going through. The counsellors are very understanding and helpful in anyway they can be. I have been attending the group for a year now and i would not have survived to this day without everyone’s support including the counsellors. They are very very knowledgeable on the subject of grief and bereavement and very supportive. I cannot thank Sunderland Mind and the group enough for all their help and continued support – K

The group gives me the opportunity to describe situations and feelings of loss with others and share emotions. There is a professional leader who encourages different ways of coping, especially with grief. It is an opportunity to make friends and not feel alone. It helps you find out that there are ‘other ways’ of dealing with the stresses of loss and helps you improve emotionally – L
