Anticipatory grief is the worry of loss through death when the death has not yet occurred. That space or time leading up to a death of someone you love and care for or your own end of life process.

Sad, worried, overwhelmed, guilty, ashamed, low mood, anxious, fear and panic, loneliness, disturbed sleep, digestive upsets, exhaustion and just unexplained physical pain symptoms.

These are all valid experiences that can be faced when living with the reality a family member, a friend or yourself is coming the end of their life. This list of feelings and emotions, physical and psychological pain is not exhaustive. A terrifying thought watching this happen, waiting for this to happen and the helplessness also felt when there is nothing you can do to change this pending ultimate outcome; that waiting game, the game you just don’t want to play, the game you want to stop and just go back to how things were and recognising there is just no going back…

Knowing no-one understands your pain and torment, that many avoid wanting to listen about where you are at with this, how would you start the conversation anyway without seemingly being insensitive to the other. Some days are fine and other days all consuming yet you have to be strong for the other; strong for you we can also be your strength to walk alongside you on this journey.

Alone Together, our Anticipatory Grief Support Group offers a time where you can pop along to a different environment, a different four walls, with like minded people, to maybe just chat, to share or just to be – to sit with a cuppa that someone else has made for you… Time just for you.
