We’re Local Mind Excellence Award Winners!

We were incredibly proud to attend the 6th Local Mind Excellence Awards in Birmingham where we won the Promoting Positive Attitudes to Mental Health award and came highly commended in the Workforce, Volunteers and Culture category.

The awards are open to all local Minds across the England and Wales who have recently achieved the Mind Quality Mark. National Mind say that this gives local Minds an opportunity to be recognised for their ‘amazing skills, talents and commitment – while acknowledging the difference they make.’

Supporting local people across Sunderland to achieve positive mental health will always be at the heart of everything we do. Thank you so much National Mind for recognising all the hard work we do and congratulations to all the local minds involved!

Chief Executive Officer Trish Cornish and our Operational Development Manager Leigh Ann Thomson stood holding awards next to a Christmas tree and National Mind Banner.

About Sunderland Mind’s work:

At Sunderland Mind, a simple idea underpins organisational culture: “I’m no different to anyone that comes through our door”. This ethos is shared by staff and volunteers, many of whom have lived experience themselves. The belief in equality shapes every aspect of Sunderland Mind’s work and empowers the challenging of barriers and stigma surrounding mental health.

Sunderland Mind starts by considering the whole person. From the moment people walk through the door, they are seen not as isolated individuals, but as part of families and communities. That ethos extends across staff, volunteers, and service users. Everyone is supported in a way that enables them to bring their full selves to their roles, while providing space and care to others.

Initiatives like peer-led drop-ins and the confidential Listening Ear service create space for conversations about mental health and build a sense of understanding, connection and community. Sunderland Mind’s work with schools enables young people to share their personal challenges and how they overcome them – not only raising awareness about mental health but actively building empathy and resilience. ‘The Road Back’ podcast brings together staff and volunteers to share authentic stories of lived experience, reaching the wider community and driving destigmatisation.

Sunderland Mind’s work has changed mindsets and opened up difficult conversations around self-harm and suicide and the myths that surround them. This work ripples outwards, positively impacting individuals, their families, and the wider community.
